Is the Wine Museum in Ensenada Worth a Visit?

The Museo de La Vid y El Vino ("Museum of the Vine and the Wine") in the Valle de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Valley) was built at a cost of $5.3 million, and opened in 2012 by the then president Felipe Calderón. Is it any good?

1. Location

Located in an impressive modern building, the museum is on the Mex 3 highway which forms the backbone of "La Ruta del Vino", about 30 minutes from the centre of Ensenada. The entrance is on the lower of the two floors and the fee is just 50 pesos for adults. Opening hours are 9-5, Tuesday to Friday.

2. History

The exhibits are divided into four sections, the first of which briefly traces the history of wine and its journey from the Caucasus via North Africa and Europe to New Spain (now Mexico). It's worth pointing out here that everything is in Spanish only, so if you don't understand español you'll need the help of someone who does (cough).

3. Identity and Industry

The next two sections, "Identity" and "Industry" look at the process of wine production and wine tasting, with views of the valley providing a scenic backdrop.

5. The Building

Upstairs there are a few more exhibits at the entrance to a large function room, which is used for conferences, weddings, etc. A lift to the upper floor is also available.
